Eid Family Reflection Farah Semy, 8th grader at JGMS

Ramadan takes place on the ninth month of the lunar calendar and is one of Islam’s most important months of the year. Muslims believe that it is during this month that the first Quranic verses were revealed to Prophet Muhamamd. Throughout this month, Muslims strengthen their relationship with Allah (God) by fasting, doing charity, and showing kindness along with patience. It is also a month to forgive and come together as one. Eid al-Fitr marks the end of Ramadan and directly translates to “the festival of breaking the fast.”

On Eid al-Fitr, Muslims celebrate by waking up early to perform a special prayer called Eid Namaz. Many Muslims also dress up in new clothes and apply henna to their hands. Some get together with family and friends to have a celebratory feast.

This year, my family celebrated Eid al-Fitr in the morning by attending Eid Namaz and visiting my grandparents to wish them Eid Mubarak. In the evening, we gathered at my grandparents’ house to spend time together and celebrate with a special dinner. My mom also applied henna on my hands.

Bedford celebrated Eid al-Fitr for the first time this year at Lane Elementary School. At this celebration, several Bedford volunteers applied henna, led arts and craft activities, and read storybooks to children. We also had a guest speaker, who gave a presentation on Ramadan and Eid. We hope to celebrate again next year.
