A Bedford High School peer leader and sports team captain with a long record of successful fundraising with Relay for Life is the 2024 recipient of the Marion Bryan Citizenship Award, sponsored by the Bedford Minuteman Company.

Elena Protasowicki will accept the award at Saturday morning’s pole-capping ceremonies at Willson Park.

The award is named for a longtime beloved substitute teacher in the Bedford schools. Bryan died in December 2021 at age 95.

The recipient of the Citizenship Award is selected by teachers in the Bedford High School Social Studies Department.

“Elena is an independent learner and credits her academic success to her time management skills, advocacy for her needs, and curiosity for knowledge,” said Christine Butler, Social Studies Department program administrator. “She is an accomplished student, taking rigorous courses and earning the Seal of Biliteracy in Spanish.”

Protasowicki is captain of the cross country and winter track teams, and also is a longtime trained dancer. She is a member of the National Honor Society chapter at BHS.

“During the school year, she is an intern at the local elementary school, while over the summer, she tutors elementary and middle school students and is a camp counselor,” Butler reported.

As a team captain for the Relay for Life Committee at BHS, Protasowicki has helped organize the main event, led the planning and year-round fundraisers, and recruited participants, building relationships with survivors and caregivers. Her individual fundraising has netted some $20,000 during the past six years.
