Basketball Showdown in Tewksbury on Friday for Berth in Final Four

March 7, 2024

No one predicted this.

The Bedford High School Buccaneers will face the Middleborough High Sachems on Friday beginning at 6 p.m. in the gym at Tewksbury Memorial High School for a berth in the MIAA Division 2 Final Four.

The Bucs finished the regular season at 14th in the power rankings, so when they traveled to third-ranked Pope Francis in Springfield on Tuesday and defeated the Cardinals by 10 points, it was a huge upset.

Then another Cinderella team showed up.

On Wednesday in Milford, Middleborough outlasted the home team, 76-71. Middleborough had a power ranking of 38 out of 42 qualifying teams with a regular season record of 12-8.

The Sachems needed a play-in game to compete in the field of 32, and they nipped Reading Memorial by two. Then they started to do some more damage, defeating sixth-seeded Hopkinton by 13 followed by the win against 22nd-ranked Milford.

The Bucs are somewhat familiar with the Tewksbury High gym. They split two games there in late December in the Romano Tournament.

Bedford Head Coach Anthony Halls said after Tuesday’s win in Springfield that he is emphasizing to his players that at this point in the tournament, “Everybody out there is good,” regardless of regular-season power rankings.

Tickets to Friday’s game are online online and can be purchased at: https://gofan.co/event/1452257?schoolId=MA14503
