What’s Bedford Thinking? Streaming Services with Ads

January 26, 2024

The other day while surfing the cornucopia of streaming services we subscribe to, we landed on Amazon Prime and started watching something. Although I remember getting an email about it, I had forgotten that starting in January Prime TV would come with ads if we did not opt to pay an additional fee. We did not pay the fee. Our first reaction to the plethora of ads was extreme annoyance. We already seem to pay $139/year for our “free” shipping. The least they could do is let us watch reruns for “free.”

Almost all of the streaming services now have tiered pricing. Within those tiers there seem to be sub-tiers (i.e., you can pay less and get less). From my point of view, their implementation strategy seems to raise the price for what you already had, but offers to keep the price the same except now with ads.

Here’s an article in CNET breaking it all down:  Streaming With Ads: Netflix vs. Disney Plus vs. Hulu and More – CNET Oct. 27, 2023
