Electric Vehicles – What’s Bedford Thinking?

April 19, 2024

Electric Vehicle (EV) sales growth has been slowing recently. In the United States, seven percent of the population say they own an electric vehicle, which is up three percent from a year ago, but the trend seems to be slowing. A recent Gallup survey found that fewer Americans are seriously considering buying one, a drop from 12 to 9 percent. The number of people who say they might consider buying an EV is at 35 percent, down from 43 percent in 2023.

There are many possible reasons. Among them, many of those who said last year they would buy one, actually did. Most of the early adopters have already purchased one. Infrastructure support is a concern. Politics also plays into the desire to own an EV. Of self-identified conservatives, 72 percent say they would never consider buying an EV, compared with self-identified liberals with 27 percent saying they would never consider buying one.

Here are the trends since 2020.
