Father Kevin Toomey and members of St. Michael Parish are very interested in helping the migrant families living at the Bedford Plaza Hotel, who started arriving in August. With winter fast approaching, St. Michael has organized two drives to collect items that these families will need to stay warm.
On Sunday, Nov. 19, third and fourth graders in St. Michael’s Religious Education Program brought in winter essentials as part of the St. Michael’s Winter Hat, Mitten, Glove, and Scarf Drive.
Michelle Colasante, Director of Religious Education at St. Michael, helped organize the drive. The students worked together to collect new hats and gloves for children and adults who are experiencing their first winter in New England. The project gave the students a real sense of accomplishment. These donated items will be distributed to the families this week.
A second drive at St. Michael’s is now underway: The Winter Pajama Collection. Members of the parish invite Bedford residents to join them in donating new winter pajamas for these adults and children. These items can be brought to the St. Michael Parish Center on Sunday, Dec. 3.
Pajamas will be collected through Monday, Dec. 11. Office hours are 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Mondays through Thursdays. The new pajamas will be given to the families before the holidays.
