What’s Bedford Thinking – When do you turn on your heat?

September 29, 2023

A new school year has started. Bedford Day has come and gone. Mums and pumpkins are appearing on porches. The autumnal equinox was last Saturday, Sept. 23. According to the National Weather Service, temperatures in Bedford dipped below 40 degrees a couple of times this week.

Fall has arrived.

And in many homes in New England with the turn of the season, waking up to a crispness in the air in the morning, or having to put on two or three extra layers to rid a deep chill after coming indoors brings out a debate: Is it time to turn on the heat?

Some people have rules about when to turn on the heat. They don’t turn on the heat until Oct. 1, or until the first frost, or until the temperature drops below 20 degrees F. For some, it’s a matter of pride, a personal challenge, or a tradition filtered down from a different generation. For others, it may be necessary economics (Please do check out Bedford’s heating assistance programs for support: https://bedfordma.gov/551/Heating-Assistance).

However it goes in your house, we’re wondering how you decide when to turn on the heat!
