Bedford Travel Basketball Registration is Now Open

September 13, 2023

Submitted by Bedford Travel Basketball

Registration is open for the Bedford Travel Basketball Program. All Bedford and Hanscom AFB residents as well as students who attend a Bedford school as part of the METCO program in grades two through eight for the 2023-24 school year are invited to sign up between now and Thursday, Sept. 28.

The Bedford Travel Basketball Program is for players seeking a higher level of commitment and competition, playing in a competitive league against teams from other towns. Basketball should be a child’s primary sports commitment during the winter season to take part in this program.

Travel teams generally have 1.5 hours of practice per week with one or two games on the weekends. Games run from the first week of December through early March. Games will also be scheduled on both weekends of February vacation and during the December break.

Travel Basketball requires a commitment from players and parents to attend practices and games. Players who routinely miss practices or games may realize less playing time during games.

The travel teams for boys and girls in grades three through eight will compete in the Metrowest League (www.metrowestbball.com). The number of teams in each grade and each year can vary based on factors including the number of players trying out, competitiveness/skill level of the players trying out, and availability of qualified coaching candidates.

The registration fee for travel basketball is $350 per player with a $500 cap per family. Contact Bedford Travel Basketball if the registration fee is a hardship.

Money will be refunded if a child does not make a Travel team. A refund is not granted for children who drop out after teams have been created.

Tryouts for each grade level will be held in late September and early October. More information will be posted on the Travel Basketball website regarding the tryout schedule.

All players must be registered and fully paid to attend tryouts.

Uniforms:  A standard uniform (reversible jersey and shorts) is required for all Travel players. Uniform fees are not factored into the registration (for budget purposes – assume somewhere around $75).

Practice: Travel teams will practice once a week beginning in early November. Practices may be held on any night of the week including Saturday in the event there are no games scheduled. Practices are usually at one of the gyms in Bedford and can range from 5 to 9 p.m.

Coaches: Bedford Travel Basketball typically has about 15 teams and is always in search of volunteers to help coach in the program. It is highly recommended that all coaches for the upcoming season be vaccinated. To register or for more information about the Bedford Travel Basketball Program, visit www.bedfordtravelbasketball.com/Registration/.
