An Obituary: Barbara A. Bradford

Barbara A. (Dunn) Bradford of Sudbury, formerly of Bedford and Lunenburg, died peacefully on Aug. 5, 2023, at the age of 93.

Barbara was born in Boston on Dec. 19, 1929, and was the daughter of the late John and Mary Ellen (Welsh) Dunn. The Dunn family then moved to Bedford where she was raised with her older sister Shirley and younger sister Jane.

After graduating Lexington High School, she attended Emmanuel College in Boston where she earned her bachelor’s degree in education. Her career started as a high school teacher in Devens, followed by teaching Nursery School and later in life, she was a full charge bookkeeper with many local businesses.

She was married to William Bradford of Milton for 17 years and lived in New Jersey and New York. They had five children. Barbara moved back to Bedford in 1970 as a single mother to finish raising her family.

In 1986, she purchased and moved into the family lake house in Lunenburg, which remained a destination for family gatherings. In 2001 she relocated to Sudbury.

Her greatest pleasure in life was being a mother, a grandmother and a great-grandmother. She also took great pleasure in being with her many nieces and nephews.

Barbara was predeceased by her daughter Mary Ellen Sailer, and her daughter-in-law Pamela (Paul) and her sisters, Shirley Horrigan and Jane Rioux. 

She is survived by her son Paul G. Bradford of Medford, her son William W. Bradford, Jr. and his wife Robin of Bethlehem PA, her son Steven R. Bradford and his wife Carol of Sudbury, and her son Robert D. Bradford and his wife Theresa of Bedford, as well as 13 grandchildren, and 8 great grandchildren.

Visitation will be held at the Bedford Funeral Home, 167 The Great Rd., Bedford, from 4 to 6 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 11. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Ascension Parish, 160 Concord Rd., Sudbury at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 12. Interment will be at Shawsheen Cemetery in Bedford.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
