An Obituary: James Wheeler

James “Jim” Wheeler, 65, passed away peacefully at the Edith Nourse Rogers Memorial Veterans Hospital in Bedford on Thursday, July 27, 2023.

Jim was born in Melrose on July 21, 1958 to the late Juanita Hope Wheeler and James Milton Wheeler. Jim grew up in Bedford and graduated from Shawsheen Valley Technical H.S. After high school, Jim joined the US Marine Corps, serving as a cook. After his discharge, Jim remained active helping veterans at the Bedford VA Hospital.

He was known for his gardening skills and his supportive heart. Jim enjoyed monthly visits to Cape Cod to visit family. Jim loved the family dog Shadow and enjoyed taking his family on vacation each year to Gunstock and Lincoln, NH. Jim loved doing activities with his family.

Jim was a member of the First Baptist Church of Bedford where he attended regularly. Recently, Jim decided to be baptized at the church surrounded by his church family.

All who knew Jim were blessed by his kind and giving nature. When asked what he would like people to know about him, Jim said he wanted to be known as a kind and gentle man. Jim always would show up for others. He was not a man of many words, but his actions spoke more than words ever could.

Jim is survived by brother George Wheeler, nephews Devon and James Wheeler, and niece Emily Wheeler.

The funeral procession will begin at 10:45 a.m. on Thursday, Aug.3 from the Shawsheen Funeral Home, 281 The Great Rd., Bedford, traveling to Shawsheen Cemetery for a graveside service at 11a.m. A celebration of Jim’s life will follow at The First Baptist Church of Bedford, 155 Concord Rd., Bedford.
