Ask Aunt Laura: How to Build a Fire in your Fireplace

Have you ever made a fire only to have the smoke come billowing into the room? (Yes, my hand is raised!)

Or maybe you have done everything perfectly but for some reason, the wood is just smoldering instead of catching fire? (Hand raised again!)

Making a fire in your fireplace is actually pretty simple as long as you follow a few simple steps. The first is making sure your fireplace damper is open AND you’ve created airflow to bring the smoke from the fire up and out the chimney. The second is to layer your fuel, which consists of newspaper and seasoned firewood (meaning it has been dried to remove moisture). Taking the extra few minutes to do this right will create a beautiful fire to warm your toes by…and maybe sip some wine too.
