These two genuine John Hancock signatures can be seen on documents owned by the Bedford Historical Society.

The upper document, signed in 1758 by a young John Hancock, deals with a family matter – the will of the town’s first minister, Nicholas Bowes, who was Hancock’s uncle by marriage. Young John was still in the process of developing his famous signature.

The lower signature (enlarged) was done years later, when Hancock was the Governor of Massachusetts after the Revolution. By then John Hancock really knew how to put his John Hancock on a document.
