With Hurricane Sandy possibly heading our way, the Bedford Police Department has implemented a web-based contact system, NIXLE, along with its Twitter feed and reverse 911 calls to share important public safety information with residents.

In a press release issued today, the Bedford Police Department announced that the Nixle Communication Service allows the Bedford Police Department to create and publish messages that will be delivered to subscribed residents instantly via cell phone text message and /or email. Notifications can also be accessed online at Nixle’s web site at www.nixle.com. The service is secure, reliable and easy for both the department and the public to use.

“We already get information out via Twitter and Facebook, but not everyone uses those.  Almost everyone has a cell phone and this is just another way for us to get important information out to the community.” said Officer Marc Saucier, one of the Department’s two Information Technology Officers.

Messages may include road closures, emergency situations or severe weather alerts as well as other relevant safety and community event information.

Residents of Bedford and those in neighboring communities can immediately begin receiving pertinent information via text message, email, and web by registering at www.nixle.com or by texting their zip code to 888777.

Along with registering for Bedford’s new Nixle connection, you can receive important community and police department  information via the Bedford Police Department’s web site; their Facebook page; their Twitter feed; or you can sign up for their email newsletter. The town also maintains an emergency radio station at AM1640.
