Council on Aging Hosts 2024 Jacob Wren Throckmorton Memorial Art Show, April 13

Submitted by the Council on Aging

The Bedford Council on Aging (COA), 12 Mudge Way, is hosting the 9th Annual Jacob Wren Throckmorton Memorial Art Show from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 13.

Along with Jacob’s art and writings, all local artists and musicians, age 55 and older, are encouraged to submit art or sign up to perform during the show.

This year, the show includes kindness rock painting from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. and a special ukulele performance. The reception, recognizing the artists and the annual greeting card competition winners, will be held at 1 p.m.

Jacob Wren Throckmorton was 19 years old when he died unexpectedly in his sleep of myocarditis on July 22, 2014. A lifelong resident of Bedford, he had volunteered at the COA since seventh grade. Each Saturday, he worked with staff members Pat Le Van and Vicki Umanita, assisting with parties and birthday events. Jacob helped serve food and drinks, sat and chatted with seniors, and, on occasion, brought his guitar to play and sing for everyone. He wanted to be helpful and bring a smile to others in any way possible.

Jacob was preparing to attend Lesley University College of Art and Design in September of that year. He was excited to be starting art school and also excited to be close enough to be able to come back to volunteer on Saturdays with Vicki and the friends he had made at the COA.

Jacob would be proud and honored to be part of this annual event that showcases the creative talents of seasoned artists in and around Bedford. The hope is that the whole community will enjoy this unique experience and join the COA in creating, viewing, and listening to local talent while celebrating Jacob’s life, love, and respect for older people.

If you are interested in submitting art, performing, or contributing to this special event, please contact the COA at 781-275-6825 or email at [email protected].

The Jacob Wren Throckmorton Memorial Art Show Fund was set up to support COA art classes and programs throughout the year. Last year, the show supported the first ukulele program for the COA. If you are interested in learning how to play ukulele and joining in the jam session, please contact the COA.
