Sophomore Anderson Marino pitched six brilliant innings and the winning and insurance runs scored after some old-school execution on Thursday as the Bedford High School Buccaneers won their first baseball game of 2024 at home over longtime rival Wayland, 6-3.
Marino’s first varsity start was impressive as he scattered four hits and two walks, striking out five. The only blemish was a home run by Matty Johansson that cleared the left-field fence with a man on.
That tied the score 3-3 after four innings, but Bedford regained the lead for good in the bottom of the fifth. Catcher Drew Siwik blasted a double in the left-center gap to begin the rally, and Ethan Kauffman followed with a hard grounder to the shortstop hole that struck the umpire for an infield single, though Siwik couldn’t advance.
First-year Head Coach Geoff Chase then had his number-six batter, designated hitter Dylan Lykins, sacrifice the runners into scoring position. Lykins dropped a perfect bunt several feet in front of the plate. The only play was to first.
Grant Bouchard stepped into the box with two runners in scoring position – and they both came home on wild pitches. Bedford had a 5-3 lead that proved insurmountable. The Bucs added a run in the sixth, and Ryan McGrath took over on the mound to close, striking out two Warriors in the final inning.
Leading the Bedford attack was leadoff hitter Cian O’Donnell with three hits and two runs batted in. Kauffman, Bouchard, and Chase Brazee collected two hits each.
Bedford broke through after losing its first two game despite scoring 18 runs: 10-9 at Pentucket Regional on Monday and 12-9 at home vs. Newton South on Wednesday.
