Bedford Police Department Observes Distracted Driving Awareness Month

April 2, 2024

From the Bedford Police Department

The month of April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month. In Massachusetts, the Hands-Free Law was enacted four years ago. The Bedford Police take this opportunity to remind drivers to practice responsible behavior with electronic devices while driving.

Electronic devices should be mounted if needed to be viewed for applications such as navigation. Operators may use a cell phone to call 911 to report an emergency. If possible, safely pull over and stop before calling 911.

Penalties for violating the hands-free law are as follows:

  • First offense – $105 fine
  • Second offense – $255 fine, plus mandatory completion of a distracted driving educational program
  • Third and subsequent offenses – $505 fine, plus insurance surcharge and mandatory completion of a distracted driving educational program

Bedford Police Officers will be taking a proactive approach for enforcing distracted driving during the month of April. The purpose of this effort is to educate the motoring public and strengthen the public’s awareness of the dangers of distracted driving. This will occur throughout the Town of Bedford and be done so in a manner to be minimally disruptive to the motoring public.
