School Committee Favors Big Game over Regular Meeting

March 11, 2024

The Bedford School Committee is postponing their meeting. For one night, anyway. And for a good reason.

Late Monday morning, the office of School Superintendent Cliff Chuang announced, “We are cancelling the School Committee meeting tomorrow night to allow our Bedford community the opportunity to support our Bedford High School boys’ basketball team.”

The Buccaneers will face Sharon High School in the Clark Athletic Center on the University of Massachusetts, Boston, campus in the MIAA Division 2 semifinals on Tuesday around 7 p.m.

Chuang said he polled School Committee members over the weekend, and the outcome was “that we could conduct time-sensitive business at another time to avoid a conflict with the game.”

He said, “Many community members, including School Committee members and the superintendent, are excited to support” the team in the Division 2 Final Four, “which is not a regular occurrence.”

Indeed, this is only the fourth trip to the state boys’ basketball semifinals in 67 years of interscholastic sports at BHS.

“Time-sensitive” matters will be addressed at a brief virtual School Committee meeting on Wednesday at 8 p.m., Chuang’s office said, while “all other agenda items on the March 12 agenda will be moved to the next meeting.” Normally that would be March 26, but Town Meeting is required to preclude other government meetings that night.
