Letter to the Editor: Student Favors Deleting Tik Tok Accounts

Submitted by Anthony Randazzo, President, BHS Republican Club

On Tuesday, March 13, the House of Representatives passed the bipartisan Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act. The act specifically prohibits apps from giving user data to our adversaries such as the Chinese Communist Party. Our very own representative, Seth Moulton (whom I disagree with on virtually every issue except this one), was an original sponsor of the bill before the Energy and Commerce committee voted on it. It’s unclear when the senate will vote on the bill, but President Biden has pledged to sign it if Congress passes it.

The claim that China is using Tik Tok’s user data to spy on Americans is not a conspiracy theory. There has been significant evidence of strong ties between the CCP and ByteDance. This bill will force Tik Tok’s Beijing based parent company, ByteDance, to sell the app to an American company within 180 days of the bill’s enactment or else it will be banned. I deleted my Tik Tok account about two years ago. Even though Tik Tok passed some of the time during the COVID-19 lockdowns, it is a wolf in sheep’s clothing. I’m urging all Tik Tok users to not only delete the app, but delete your accounts completely. Even though I don’t encourage mindlessly scrolling through your social media feeds, there are other apps such as Instagram that work just like Tik Tok, except there aren’t Chinese spies preying on you.

God Bless!
