Letter to the Editor: ‘Overflow’ Room at Town Meeting Not Well Managed

Submitted by Chris Lennon

I’m sitting here writing this when I should be at Town Meeting voting on Articles 11 and 12. I was up in the overflow room.  I’m sure the delays were an annoyance to the moderator. But after Article 10, seeing 30 seats open, he closed the overflow room for the 55 people there. When I arrived at the auditorium there were still people standing. The auditorium was packed, and while it might have been pleasant up there on the stage, all around me I could hear a steady stream of coughing and hacking from people who sounded like they were bringing up a lung.

Why bemoan the fact that few show for town meeting when those that do show aren’t accommodated?

That’s awful. I had assumed the overflow room had less than 30 people when he closed it.

I’m sure that Dave Powell, the Town Moderator, would like to learn about your experience. According to the town website, he’s reachable at [email protected] .
