Letter to the Editor:  Support for Dan Brosgol

Submitted by Ann E. Guay

With March fast approaching, Bedford voters will soon be returning to the polls to elect candidates for open town government positions. Part of what makes Bedford such a wonderful place to live is the strong volunteer spirit of our community. Bedford is fortunate to have so many well-qualified individuals willing to serve in town government.

I was pleased when Dan shared with me his plans to run for Select Board. Dan and I worked closely together on Bedford School Committee for close to nine years, including during Covid. Dan is such an effective member of the Bedford School Committee and his decision to leave is a loss. However, for reasons set forth more clearly below, I believe his experience on the Bedford School Committee makes him an ideal candidate for Select Board.

During his three terms on Bedford School Committee, Dan conducted two superintendent searches[i], served as chair three times, oversaw four building projects, reviewed collective bargaining agreements and played an important part in the development of annual school budgets. I saw firsthand how committed Dan was to the position. He came to every meeting prepared, asked pointed questions, did not hesitate to sometimes disagree with other members or the administration and never lost site of the district’s mission to maintain high standards while meeting the needs of all Bedford students. We sometimes disagreed about issues before the Bedford School Committee. Dan was always willing to listen to my views and consider alternative positions. During Covid, I had a front row seat to watch Dan’s ability to make informed decisions during very difficult times.

Dan’s experience as a member of the Bedford School Committee will guide him as he assumes a new position as a member of the Select Board. Most would have understood if Dan had simply decided not to run again and go home and spend Tuesday nights with his family. Instead, he has decided to take on a new role in Bedford as a member of the Select Board. It will not be easy to replace Margot Fleischman, but I believe Dan is up to the task.

Please join me in voting for Dan Brosgol for Select Board.
