The Bedford Minuteman Company was grateful for the opportunity to honor veterans on Monday, helping to kick off National Salute to Hospitalized Veterans Week at VA Bedford Healthcare System – Edith Nourse Rogers Memorial Veterans Hospital.
National Salute to Veteran Patients is observed nationally at all VA medical facilities the week of Valentine’s Day and invites members of the community to thank hospitalized Veterans for their service.
The event was described as “a touching tribute” as members of the Bedford Minuteman Company marched through several of the hospital units, playing fife and drum music.
According to Laurel Holland, Chief of the Bedford VA’s Center for Development and Civic Engagement, “There isn’t a more fitting way to start the week than to have our own Bedford Minuteman Company visit and perform for our veterans as Bedford and surrounding areas are so rich in the history of our nation. Last November, several of our hospitalized veterans had the pleasure of visiting the Bedford Flag at the Bedford Public Library, and became even more keenly interested in our local contributions to history. We couldn’t be more excited to have our Bedford Minutemen here!”
On Wednesday, the hospital leadership team personally delivered thousands of handmade cards and valentine balloons to each veteran.
VA Bedford is happy to welcome volunteers and talent to honor “our nation’s heroes.” For more information about volunteering, contact the VA Bedford Center for Development & Civic Engagement at 781-687-3076.
