An Obituary: Gayle Doherty

Gayle Marie Doherty of Pepperell, formerly of Bedford, passed away peacefully at her home on Feb. 14, 2024 at the age of 60. She was the loving mother of Dylan James Baker.

Gayle was born at St. Margaret’s Home for Unwed Mothers in Dorchester on July 12, 1963. She was adopted by Thomas and Eleanor Doherty from Arlington two months later. The family moved to Bedford in 1965 when Gayle was two years old. Gayle attended school in Bedford and graduated from Bedford High School in 1981.

Gayle lived in Salem, MA for 18 years and worked in marketing at Salem Hospital, where for a few years she was thankful to have worked with her father. In 2020, she moved to Pepperell. She was employed by McLean Hospital in Belmont as a Project Coordinator of the Information Systems department at the time of her death.

Gayle learned how to ride a motorcycle in her late forties and joined the American Legion Riders in 2016. In 2019, she became President of the Chelmsford Legion Riders, the second woman to be President in the state of MA. She was an avid supporter of Veteran and animal causes.

Gayle is survived by her sister Tina Ford and her husband Bill of Chelmsford; sister Sharon Doherty of Acton, her brother Chris Doherty and his wife Irma of Londonderry, NH; brother Mike Scott and his wife Janet of Davidson, NC and brother Rob Scott and his wife Sheila of Needham. She is also survived by her nieces and nephews Keely and Patrick Ford, Kaitlan, Ava and Leah Doherty, Zach and Taylor Scott, Jack and Alicia Scott. She was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas and Eleanor Doherty in 2010 and 2013, respectively. 

She is also survived by a half-brother, Adam Goodwin, and half-niece, Brooklyn Bardeen.

Visitation will be held in Shawsheen Funeral Home, 281 Great Rd., Bedford from 4 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 20. A Funeral service will be held in St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 100 Pine Hill Rd., Bedford, at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 21. The burial will be private.
