Girls Begin Long Homestand after Key Basketball Win

January 24, 2024

One of the most interesting – remarkable, really – facts about the 8-2 Bedford High School girls’ basketball team is that it has only one win at home.

The schedule will rebalance starting at 5 p.m. on Wednesday with the first of five straight home games through Feb. 6. Wednesday’s match will be a Dual County League contest vs. Wayland. The Bucs defeated the Warriors at their gym earlier.

Head Coach Jim DeBenedictis said Monday’s 43-33 win at Division I Malden Catholic was especially impressive.

“It was a good quality win against a very tough opponent, bigger than us at every position,” he said.

He credited the team’s toughness and senior “grit” and leadership – Cassie Morrison, Bridget Sheahan, Mackenzie and Madison Tierney – for the successful outcome. The game was close well into the fourth quarter.

Bedford’s defense held the 6-5 Lancers to their lowest point total of the season.

Malden Catholic comes to the BHS gymnasium for a rematch next Monday, but that’s still light years from the thoughts of DeBenedictis and the team.

“Every game matters and we literally are going one game at a time,” the coach said on Tuesday.

The Bucs host Westford Academy on Friday evening.
