Bedford resident Dr. Paul-André Bempéchat, a renowned classical pianist, has scheduled his annual recital in honor of the composer Ludwig von Beethoven for Saturday beginning at 8 p.m.
The performance will be available online only and can be accessed at https://www.youtube.com/@pabpiano4307.
Saturday’s program will include four Beethoven sonatas: Op. 53 (“Waldstein,” C major), Op. 54 (F major), Op. 57 (“Appassionata,” F minor), and Opus 90 (E minor).
The recital is a benefit for The Shelf at the Massachusetts College of Art and Design in Boston, where Bempéchat is a visiting lecturer. The Shelf offers help for students experiencing nutrition insufficiency (https://massart.edu/food-resources-massart-area).
Bempéchat said he holds the recital early each December to try to coincide with Beethoven’s birthday (Dec. 16, 1770).
At the College of Art and Design, Bempéchat teaches a freshman seminar entitled, “Why Beethoven?” The course is also scheduled through Harvard Extension School for five months beginning in January.
The class is more than music appreciation, he said; students explore “a lot of historical, philosophical, and sociological depth” that made Beethoven “the most indispensable composer we have.”
Bempéchat is a graduate of the Juilliard and Manhattan Schools of Music, the Sorbonne, and Boston University. His career has spanned the European and North American continents over several decades.
