The continuing closure of Route 3 northbound in Billerica due to a capsized fuel truck is adding volume to Bedford traffic.

“We are seeing an uptick in northbound traffic and expect the evening commute to be extremely heavy,” said Police Chief John Fisher. “We ask the public’s patience as the investigation and cleanup efforts continue tonight.”

The accident occurred just before 10 a.m. north of Treble Cove Road. Northbound traffic is being detoured at the exit for Concord Road in Billerica.

Thousands of gallons of fuel spilled from the tanker, and Lt. Brian Oates reported to the scene as part of the regional hazardous materials response team, said Interim Fire Chief Paul Sheehan.

“Bedford residents should add significant travel time to any errands they are running in Bedford tonight as many commuters will use Bedford roadways to circumvent the highway shutdown,” Chief Fisher advised.
