The Bedford Youth and Family Services Department invites parents/caregivers to a workshop entitled “The Truth About the Alarming Effects of Marijuana & Vaping on Adolescent Youth.” The workshop will detail the effects of marijuana and vaping on adolescent youth. It will include a discussion on how marijuana and vaping are marketed towards youth, strategies to deter children from those messages, and how to talk about drug use in the home.

UPDATED: THIS EVENT HAS BEEN CANCELED. The speaker will present from 7 to 8 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 20, in the Large Group Instruction (LGI) Room on the second floor of Bedford High School, 9 Mudge Way. There will be an interactive display available starting at 6:30 p.m., 30 minutes prior to the presentation that will be available until 30 minutes following the presentation.

The Speaker will be Cory Mashburn, M.Ed., who has over 20 years of expertise in the field of prevention services and more than 25 years of experience working with youth and people with disabilities. He has overseen the planning and implementation of prevention programs within communities and schools in the New England region, including substance use and abuse, bullying, cyber safety, and human rights. In addition, Mashburn has developed multiple health and wellness curricula in schools across the state of Massachusetts.

Thirty minutes before and after the speaker’s presentation will be a viewing of “Hidden in Plain Sight,” an interactive display for adults that showcases potential items in a teen’s bedroom that might signal risky behavior or substance use. This display is paired with educational posters and printed materials to increase caregiver awareness and provide resources for starting positive conversations with youth.

Youth are welcome to attend with a parent/caregiver. This event is free and open to the public.
