Council on Aging Newsletter – Nov. 2023

November 9, 2023

Submitted by Alison Cservenschi, Director, Bedford Council on Aging

Happy November to you and yours! I hope you are looking forward to celebrating the season with us this month. We have a full calendar of programs on our shortest months due to the Veterans Day and Thanksgiving holiday closures.

The Bedford Fire Department reminds everyone that the end of Daylight Saving Time is a good opportunity to check all fire alarm and carbon monoxide batteries as well as to prepare emergency, weather-related plans for the winter months. Firefighter Dana Park, the COA’s Bedford Fire Department liaison, is working with residents conducting home safety visits. This service comes through a fire safety grant.

Each November, we remember and honor our brave and courageous veterans. This day, in commemoration of the end of “The Great War” of 1918, on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, is a moment to thank all of the veterans for their sacrifices. We extend our sincere thanks to all the veterans in recognition of their service and to all the military spouses and families who serve, or have served, along-side their loved ones in their own way.

I also extend thanks to the American Legion #221, and their volunteers, for the compassionate service provided to the older residents of Bedford. Every year, the dedicated members of the Legion open their doors and welcome their older neighbors to gather, celebrate, catch up with old friends, and enjoy a delicious meal together. I am grateful for this partnership and honored to continue this tradition with the American Legion #221 in providing their annual Thanksgiving meal, this year being served on Sunday, Nov. 19.  Please consider coming this month. For more information on this program, please see the back page of this month’s COA newsletter.

During this month of thanks, I feel fortunate for your continued support of the COA. Keeping in touch or taking part in the programs and services daily, weekly, or monthly ensures the COA is serving you in the best ways possible.

I appreciate your ongoing feedback and suggestions to improve our services. Everyone at the COA wishes you, your family and loved ones a very Happy Thanksgiving. Please stop by soon.
