The Bedford Council on Aging October Newsletter

October 4, 2023

Submitted by Alison Cservenschi, Bedford COA Director

Fall is truly here when October comes around. Pumpkin-flavored treats and warm cider donuts appear to bring in the flavors of the season. I love breathing in that fall aroma and observing the beautiful trees showing off their bronze, yellow, red, and orange hues before dropping them all again. I hope you are all well and ready to celebrate another great fall season together with the Bedford COA.

This month we are offering our first-ever in-person chair yoga class on Saturdays following a number of requests. New instructor Marcelle is offering an initial complimentary class and we will gauge interest by your attendance for an ongoing Saturday class.

We have a special presentation from the Registry of Motor Vehicles called “Shifting Gears.” Thanks to Linda White of the FBCOA for arranging this safe driving program. Both classes have limited space and sign-ups are taken on the first Monday of the month.

Fall is a great time to have a cleanout and a special fall clothing drive has been arranged for people to donate unused, extra clothing in the COA parking lot this month. See page 11 of this month’s COA newsletter for more details on this event.

The Concord Players are performing on Thursday, Oct. 5 and a festive Halloween party is planned for the Tuesday, Oct. 31. Please call, email, or come in to sign up for these, and/or any other programs.

The current support groups always have space for new members, so, if in need and interested in sharing with others, reach out to find out more or read further within The COA newsletter.

October is also LGBTQIA+ history month, first observed in 1994 and founded by Missouri educator Rodney Wilson. This newer history month recognizes role models, helps build community, and represents a civil rights statement about the contributions of members of this community.

The Bedford COA is partnering again with Minuteman Senior Services, and the LGBTQIA+ Aging Project of Boston, to provide a Saturday lunch and speaker from the LGBTQIA+ History project on Saturday, Oct. 21. We welcome anyone interested in supporting and learning more about this subject.

Medicare open enrollment begins on Sunday, Oct. 15 and runs through Thursday, Dec. 7 for your annual insurance check-up. SHINE counselors Amy and Barb are available by appointment for plan reviews or changes, first-timers, and questions about costs of medical care and medications. Appointments fill up quickly, so please call ahead. More information on open enrollment can also be found at https://www.mass.gov/health-insurance-counseling

Thank you for your continued support and readership. The Bedford COA continues to be successful because of your attendance, suggestions, and participation.

Enjoy this lovely season.
