Ready, Set, Race: The Bedford Day 5K Is On!

August 23, 2023

Submitted by Bedford Recreation Department

On September 23, Bedford Day will once again kick off in style with a new twist on an old classic, as Bedford’s finest and fittest runners will toe the starting line for the new, but also not new, Bedford Day 5K.

After 25 years of the Danny Oates Memorial 5K, and a few years of the Friends For Matty 5K, this year the Bedford Recreation Department has taken over the management of the annual Bedford Day tradition, and race Directors Dan Brosgol and Nikki Taylor are very excited for this year’s run.

“I’ve run the 5K on Bedford Day just about every year since I moved to Bedford in 2007,” says Brosgol. “This year, I’m looking forward to helping launch this new tradition and see what it’s like from the other side.”

Taylor adds, “We hope that the race will embrace and celebrate the spirit of Bedford and inspire residents and friends of Bedford to take part in it.”

The course remains unchanged from prior versions of the race, featuring a long straightaway down Davis Road, a leisurely loop through the roads of West Bedford, and the classic uphill finish in front of the John Glenn Middle School. There will also be a raucous water stop on Battle Flagg Road, staffed by the Bedford High School Cross-Country team.

Recreation Director Josh Smith, ready for his second Bedford Day on the job, says “a Bedford Day road race has been a tradition for many years and we are excited to keep it going strong as a great way to start this year’s celebrations.”

The race starts at 8:30 sharp from the corner of McMahon Road and Concord Road, allowing plenty of time for runners to complete the course and get to the Bedford Day parade on time.
