Interim Fire Chief on Select Board Agenda

The agenda for a Select Board meeting scheduled for Monday includes “Appointment of Interim Fire Chief – Paul Sheehan.”

Sheehan, a retired Cambridge assistant fire chief from Arlington, is the apparent choice to serve as the interim chief of the Bedford Fire Department.

Under provisions of the town charter, the appointment is the responsibility of the town manager with approval by the Select Board.

Interim Town Manager Colleen Doyle said in an email Friday that she would not discuss the appointment until after it is ratified by the Select Board.

If appointed, Sheehan, 63, will step in for David Grunes, whose last day as fire chief will be on Aug. 18. Grunes, who joined the department as a firefighter in 1994, was named chief in 2008.

Sheehan joined the Cambridge fire department in 1988 and retired as assistant chief in February 2021.
