A Bedford Center gallery will host a 15-day exhibition of a spectrum of works made by contemporary artists in Ukraine.

“Affirmation of Life: Art from Today’s Ukraine” will be presented at The Gallery@First Parish on the Common from Sept. 23 through Oct. 7.

Organizers call the exhibition “a unique opportunity to appreciate the depth and richness of the Ukrainian culture, coming directly from artists currently living and working there.”

The artworks have been assembled for this show by Bedford residents Vlad Shapiro and Nataliya Proskura, mathematicians originally from Kyiv. Much of the art will be on view for the first time in the United States.

Special events are planned to mark the exhibit’s opening, beginning with ceremonies at the gallery at 10 a.m. on Bedford Day, Saturday, Sept. 23. The exhibit will be open until 4 p.m. followed at 5 p.m. by a concert featuring Ukrainian soprano Olga Abakumova of Sudbury.

The performer escaped from hostilities in Ukraine with her eight-year-old daughter in June under a special refugee program for Ukrainian citizens. She will be accompanied by classical pianist Clemens Teufel. There will be a small reception following the concert.

The following day, a talk about the importance of the artworks is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. in the gallery.

The gallery, which is located in the First Parish Church at 75 Great Rd., will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Mondays through Fridays. Private showings can be arranged.

All proceeds from this show will benefit Mriya (https://mriya-ua.org), a non-profit organization created by local Ukrainians, mostly young professionals and students, to provide humanitarian support for Ukraine as well as support for the arts.

This show is supported by the Bedford Cultural District Partnership, the First Parish in Bedford, and the Ukrainian Cultural Initiatives. More details are available at the website http://ukrainian-cultural-initiative.com.
