Bedford High School will be represented in the state MIAA Division II swim and dive championships this weekend at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Taelor Nichols, a freshman who finished second in last weekend’s sectionals, will compete for the girls’ diving championship on Saturday.

All of the boys who swam in the sectionals will continue on to the state tournament on Sunday.

That includes two relay teams: Boden and Matsen Spirn, Ben Sedran and Aniq Syed in the medley relay, and Boden and Matsen Spirn, Shae Arsenault and Aniq Syed in the 200-meter freestyle relay, with Thomas Barney as an alternate.

Matsen Spirn also qualified in two individual events, the 200-meter medley and the 100-meter breaststroke, while Syed will be seeded in the Division 2 100-meter butterfly.

In the Division 2 sectionals, the BHS girls’ team was represented by Sally MacPhee, Elora Syed, Millie Bonneau, and Emma Lacchia, with Hannah Messinger as alternate. The girls competed in two relays and Elora Syed also swam an individual event, achieving a state qualifying time in the 100-meter breaststroke.

Earlier this month in the Dual County League championships, Nichols came in third place for her diving event, Syed, a senior co-captain, hit her state qualifying 1:14.01 in the 100 breaststroke, and MacPhee, the other senior captain, lost five seconds in her 100 butterfly.

“The girls’ team dropped over 82 seconds in total time. With three fewer girls than boys, this is truly a remarkable feat,” said Coach Samantha Thyne, noting that the boys’ composite time dropped just over 66 seconds.
