The Friends of the Bedford Free Public Library will again present the ever-popular Dan Breen lecture series, beginning on Sunday, Feb. 7 at 2 pm.

For more than seven years, Prof. Breen has delighted Bedford with his fast-paced historical lectures covering a range of subjects, from Modern Chinese History to The Roosevelt Family, to Space Exploration.

This year Breen takes off in a new direction, as he explores five murder mysteries. He will lead off with “The Cock Lane Ghost” which asks the question, can disembodied spirits give evidence against their murderers? “A purported haunting that attracted mass public attention in 1762 on Cock Lane, a short road adjacent to London’s Smithfield Market and a few minutes’ walk from St Paul’s Cathedral. The event centered on three people: William Kent, a usurer from Norfolk, Richard Parsons, a parish clerk, and Parsons’ daughter Elizabeth.

The series will continue by Zoom on February 21 and 28,  and March 7 and 14.

About the 2021 Lecture Series

This year the lecture series is dedicated to the memory of Jim Purvis. Jim was a long time Friends’ member and bookie, who dedicated many hours sorting and appraising book donations in preparation for the Friends’ book sales.

These lectures are funded through the generosity of donations to the Friends of the Library in his memory.
