Senior captain Christian Brickman twirled a complete-game three-hitter and Sam DeAngelis drove home what proved to be the winning run with a sixth-inning sacrifice fly as the Bedford High School Buccaneers won their second varsity baseball game of the season, 3-2 over North Reading on Monday.

Brickman was consistently around the plate, walking none and pitching to contact as his defense played flawlessly behind him. The outfielders had nine putouts – seven by sophomore centerfielder Chris Randazzo – and the infield four more popups. Brickman retired the last eight Hornets in a row.

Two of Bedford’s three runs were unearned, including the score that made the difference in the bottom of the sixth. Ryan McGrath reached on a two-base throwing error. Then he appeared to be picked off second, but as he headed toward third to start a rundown, North Reading’s second baseman tripped and fell on the infield dirt, and there was no throw. That set the stage for DeAngelis’s deep fly.

Ethan Kauffman drove home the first Bedford run with a first-inning single, and the Bucs took a 2-1 lead in the third on doubles by DeAngelis and Randazzo.
