John Glenn Middle School student Mary Couvee was recently chosen to participate in a state-wide community service project, Project 351.

Project 351 is a youth-driven program where 8th graders participate in community service activities and try to create a positive change in communities. It is called Project 351 because of the 351 cities and towns in Massachusetts.

Project 351 was founded by former Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick and is currently run by Governor Charlie Baker. Couvee represented Bedford at a recent event at the JFK Library in Boston. She met Governor Baker along with his wife, Mrs. Lauren Baker. Linda Hughes, a reporter, interviewed the couple. After that ceremony, the students went to the MLK school in Dorchester and painted a mural. The theme of the mural was peace, and each student wrote inspiring words and phrases on the tiles of the wall. They also reorganized the books in the school’s library.

Mary Couvee is keeping busy as she is also currently leading the Cradles to Crayons service project with the JGMS Student Council. Cradles to Crayons accepts a wide range of donations of new and like-new items for children of all ages, from newborn to age 12. Mary will be collecting items at JGMS from April 1st to April 20th. Boxes will be available in the office and outside of the cafeteria.
