First Church to Host Second Annual West Virginia Mission Festival

Bedford’s First Congregational Church, 25 Great Road, will host its second annual West Virginia Mission Festival from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday, March 10. The celebration will feature Appalachian music and storytelling, a Southern-inspired buffet dinner, Cake Walk, and a variety of children’s activities. A free-will offering will be collected at the door with a suggested donation of $10 per person or $20 per family.

First Church will donate 100 percent of the proceeds from this event to fund its on-going humanitarian mission work in West Virginia. For four years, the First Church West Virginia Mission Project has helped fight poverty in Appalachia by supporting several nonprofit organizations dedicated to making home repairs, providing after-school programs for children, and offering art and music programming for at-risk youth.

The highlight of the evening will be live music and storytelling performed by Michael and Carrie Kline. This lively duo has been studying and chronicling the history and culture of Appalachia for 40+ years. The Klines have a long history and love of social activism, folk-life documentation, and old-time singing. Their musical sets can be heard from 5:15 to 6:15 p.m., and 7 to 8 p.m.

Buffet Dinner & Children’s Activities

A delicious dinner featuring Southern-style food will be available for $15 (adults) and $5 (youth under age 18). There will also be a variety of fun-filled activities for children (and the young at heart), as well as an old-fashioned Cake Walk – think musical chairs with a cake as the prize! We will also provide an update on our West Virginia partners’ progress. (Children’s activities are included with the free-will donation.  Cake Walk raffle tickets will be sold separately.)

All are welcome!

The entire community is invited to sample the fine cooking of our First Church chefs and listen to some toe-tapping music and inspiring storytelling while enjoying your dinner. This benefit will help bring hope and optimism to a naturally beautiful part of our country with deep cultural roots.
