According to Tuesday’s 4 pm message from the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency (MEMA), the National Weather Service (NWS) in Taunton forecasts that this evening’s sleet and freezing rain will deposit up approximately 0.1 of ice in Bedford. Icy, untreated roads may result in hazardous travel conditions.

Following a brief period of mild weather during the day on Wednesday, a significant winter storm is forecast to move into Massachusetts from west to east, starting just after midnight Thursday and overspreading the state by dawn. Snow will continue, heavy at times, through the day on Thursday before ending on Thursday evening.

The forecast indicates that 8 to 12 inches of snow will fall in Bedford on Thursday.

MEMA indicates that the storm will impact both morning and evening commutes, with hazardous travel conditions expected. Strong northeasterly winds will develop around midday Thursday over much of the Commonwealth and continue through the evening.

The National Weather Service anticipates declaring a Winter Storm Watch for southern New England starting at 10 pm Wednesday, extending through 2 am on Friday.

What’s a Watch? A Warning?

Storm Watch – Be prepared: Issued when conditions are favorable for a significant winter storm event (heavy sleet, heavy snow, ice storm, heavy snow and blowing snow or a combination of events.)

Storm Warning – Take Action: Issued for an imminent, significant winter weather event including snow, ice, sleet or blowing snow or a combination of these hazards.  Travel will become difficult or impossible in some situations. Delay your travel plans until conditions improve.
