By Ginni Spencer, President, Bedford Citizen Board of Directors
The Bedford Citizen is now beginning its fifth year of publishing local news online. In June 2012, our founders – Julie Turner, Meredith McCulloch, and Kim Siebert –dreamed of building a free, reliable and online digital newspaper for Bedford. A resource that would promote informed participation and help maintain the strong community spirit that characterizes Bedford. Thanks to their commitment, and that of a small army of readers, volunteers, and donors, The Citizen has carved out an important niche in the local landscape.
You will notice some changes in our design and layout when The Citizen launches a new, mobile-friendly website in early September. We’re keeping our trademark appearance (colors and fonts) but the layout is slightly different — we tweaked it to make it crisper, more current in look and feel, and more user-friendly. Readers who use mobile devices to access The Citizen will experience a big improvement in a mobile-friendly display that makes our stories much easier to read.
The biggest change – and the one we are most proud of – is the introduction of BeTC, a unified town calendar that will allow readers to post events of general interest along with meeting dates and times for town boards and committees. Funded by the Bedford Cultural Council, this type of calendar has long been an aspiration of local groups wanting to have a single place to coordinate scheduling for their events. It’s poised to be a go-to resource for what’s happening in Bedford, much as The Citizen itself is a go-to source for local news.
So…watch for our formal announcement, and please share your feedback. As always we are interested to hear what did we get right…what did we miss? Let us know. We are grateful for your continued support of The Bedford Citizen.
