Short Takes – Bedford Free Public Library

By Dot Bergin

LibraryThere’s always something new in your Library – and we don’t mean new books, of which there are plenty.  Library Director Richard Callaghan and the Library staff are constantly on the lookout for ways to improve patron services.

Here is a sampling, as Callaghan reported at the March 8 meeting of the Trustees:

  • A high capacity/high speed printer has been installed in the reference and teen areas, linked to all the internet computers. Patrons have 10 free pages of printing per day; after that, the cost is 10 cents per page.
  • Tax help continues to be available for individuals of low and moderate income on Fridays and Saturdays from now until April 15. Call the Library or stop by the Reference Desk to make an appointment.
  • Two new programs are underway: Knitting with Norma on Thursdays from 10 am to noon, presented by Norma Gahl, reference staff, and Genealogy Club, hosted by Rand Hall, Head of Reference, on Tuesdays. Next meeting: March 22 to discuss French-Canadian and Irish genealogy with Erin McCormack.
  • Professor Dan Breen’s lecture series, The Roosevelts: An Intimate History, continues on Sundays through the rest of March. The series will also be available on Bedford TV.
  • Looking ahead, the program Cutting the Cord: An Alternative to Cable TV, canceled due to snow, has been rescheduled for April. Watch for announcement of the date.

Director Callaghan and the Trustees are moving ahead with a five-year Strategic Plan. First step is to hire a facilitator with expertise in library planning to guide the process. Callaghan is currently reviewing proposals from two professionals and anticipates hiring one soon. In early May, the staff, Trustees, and selected members of the public will participate in focus groups led by the facilitator.

Two trustees, Howard Cohen and Lorrie Dunham, officially retired at the March meeting and were thanked for their years of service.
