In September the Council on Aging launched its first ‘Take a Hike’ program inviting like-minded seniors to meet, socialize, hike and lunch together.  The series offers exploration of local conservation trails in Bedford, Carlisle, Concord, Lexington and Lincoln.  The goal is to encourage those who enjoy longer walks, 2 hours or so, to hike for up to 4 to 6 miles.  The group meets at the Bedford COA parking lot and hiker’s car pool to the location.

The Council On Aging is lucky to have found Susan Grieb, an Appalachian Mountain Club trip leader, to volunteer her time and energy to spearhead this program bringing her passion for the outdoors to seniors.

The first hike to the Great Meadows in Concord, on September 10th gathered 16 seniors and September 17th brought 11 to the Great Brook Farm in Carlisle.  The success of the program includes Susan’s knowledge of the local area, seniors looking for a challenge and planning along with promotion with the Council On Aging.

The COA hopes to continue the longer hikes in the fall for as many seniors who are interested.  The COA also offers 1 ½ mile walks every month on local trails for those who prefer a more leisurely stroll, with Alissa Anderson, Administrative Assistant at the COA.  These programs, along numerous other offerings, are advertised in the monthly COA Newsletter and online at https://www.bedfordma.gov/council-on-aging/pages/newsletters-calendar.  All are welcome !
