7 pm update: The National Weather Service has issued a Tornado Watch for all of Massachusetts until 11:00 p.m. this evening. A Tornado Watch means that conditions are favorable for the development of tornados.
The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Watch for all of Massachusetts except the Cape and Islands until 4 p.m, with another warning for Eastern/Southeastern MA until 8 pm. Maps released by MEMA indicate that Bedford could be at ‘enhanced’ risk of a severe storm.
Potential impact could include:
- Severe thunderstorms
- Damaging winds (gusts up to 70 mph) resulting in downed trees and power lines
- Heavy rainfall may result in brief localized and urban flooding
- Hail up to the size of golf balls
- Isolated tornados
- Isolated Power outages
- Impacts to evening rush hour
The severity of today’s afternoon storms will be dependent upon the amount of heating (sunshine) that occurs after the first round of storms passes through during the morning. The primary threats with the second round of storms are damaging winds with gusts up to 70 mph, frequent cloud to ground lightening, large hail (up to the size of golf balls), periods of localized, heavy rainfall and a possible isolated tornado or two. The highest risk for this round of severe weather today is between 2pm and 8pm, with the potential for impacts to the evening commute.
