With the community meeting for the Pedestrian/Bicycle Master Plan  just a week away on Wednesday,May 13, Healthy Bedford’s 2015 Walk/Bike to School initiative couldn’t have been better timed.

Healthy Bedford Coordinator Carla Olson and Bedford Youth and Family Director Sue Baldauf with Lane School Principal Rob Ackerman and Assistant Principal Keith Kinney led scores of students and parents from Depot Park, along the Narrow Gauge Rail Trail to the Lane School playground. Selectman Margot Fleischman led dozens of walkers through neighborhood streets between St. Paul’s Episcopal Church and Lane School.

Davis School students gathered at Lutheran Church of Our Savior and then walked, biked and scootered along the Davis Road sidewalk and into the school.

Road crossings for both rides were supported by the Bedford Police Department and Bedford CERT, the town’s Community Emergency Response Team.

Participation in Walk/Bike to School has grown over the past several years as more and more families adopt healthy lifestyles, and as more trails become available around town. Sue Baldauf judged today’s ride, “This is the best one ever!”

While most parents attended one or the other ride, Jeff Stewart began his day with his daughter on the ride to Lane School, and then turned up at Davis with his son, noting that he loved events like Walk/Bike to School. With thanks to Mr. Stewart for sharing this panorama of the gathering at Depot Park. Click to see the 2015 Walk-Bike Panorama by Jeff Stewart.

As Bedford riders gathered, a contingent of students headed along the Minuteman Bikeway on their way to the Waldorf School. Their ‘sweep’ rider,  Meighan Matthews of Bedford, said that 36 Waldorf riders participated, cycling to their school from multiple towns surrounding Lexington.

The most interesting pet along the walk? Standing head and shoulders above the canine walkers was Ethan’s ferret!
