Bedford High School senior Madeline Berman is the recipient of the 2015 Environmental Scholarship.

The $1,000 scholarship is awarded annually by Bedford’s Department of Public Works and Republic Services to a Bedford High senior who takes a leading role in increasing the school’s recycling efforts and improving the efficiency of the program.

Berman, who will attend the University of Vermont in the fall, is president of the Environmental Club. According to Michael Griffin, Program Administrator for Science at Bedford High. Berman increased recycling at the school, promoted energy savings and increased the club’s membership to more than 150 students.

“Madeline kept the club’s members active with gardening and community service projects, organizing a Global Climate Change assembly and keeping track of recyclers in the school,” said Griffin. “She is truly a great leader of the club and is well deserving of the award and recognition.”

The Environmental Club coordinates recycling efforts at BHS and looks at ways to reduce the impact of the school community on the environment. Other activities include gardening, hiking, camping and various other outdoor activities.

“Madeline’s efforts with the Environmental Club are impressive,” said Roy Sorenson, DPW Director. “Her efforts made the town’s recycling program more successful this past year and the improvements made under her leadership will benefit the program in the coming years.”
