A revised Flood Insurance Rate Map (FIRM) of the Shawsheen River area, just released by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), will be reviewed by the Board of Selectmen at its upcoming meeting on Monday, June 9.
FIRMs are derived from FEMA’s assessment of flood hazard risks, which may be designated as either regular or special; these designations affect the amount and cost of available federal insurance for flood-damage claims in participating communities. Changes to the most recent Concord River FIRM were accepted at the last Town Meeting.
According to DPW engineer Adrienne St. John, the Selectmen will be determining whether to initiate an appeal of the latest Shawsheen River FIRM. Affected property-owners may also initiate appeals within FEMA’s 90-day comment period, which began within the past few days.
As was the case for the Concord River FIRM – see https://thebedfordcitizen.org/2013/06/19/fema-revises-concord-river-floodplain-map-affecting-100-properties/ — the DPW is expected to compile an informational mailing to affected owners. The Shawsheen River FIRM will be available at Town Hall.
