Town Charter Review Underway

By Joan Bowen

Charter-ReviewThe recently appointed Charter Review Committee held its first meeting on April 30.  Members of the committee include representatives of the Selectmen, Planning Board, School Committee and the Town Moderator plus five citizens at large.  Betsey Anderson, Town Moderator, was elected chair and Jan Shepard elected clerk at the first meeting.

The role of the Charter Review Committee is ‘‘to study the working of Town government and recommend revisions and amendments considered advisable.”  Chair Anderson told The Citizen that “suggestions from citizens and Town boards, committees and departments are encouraged.  The committee meetings are open to all.  Watch for future information on the date of a meeting to specifically address input from citizens.  We will be happy to receive written suggestions which may be sent to the Town Manager’s Office.”

All meetings of the Charter Review Committee are open.  Future meetings are scheduled for May 19, June 11 and June 26 at 7 pm at the Town Hall.  Additional meetings will be scheduled throughout the summer and early fall.

In accordance with provisions of the Charter, changes must be approved by a two-thirds majority at a Town Meeting and a majority vote at a Town election.  Therefore, the target for completing the work is this fall so that any proposed Charter amendments are ready for consideration at the anticipated fall Special Town Meeting, in preparation for the March 2015 Town Election.

Copies of the Charter are in the Reference Department of the Bedford Public Library, in the Office of the Town Clerk at the Town Hall, and on Bedford’s website www.bedfordma.gov.
