The North Road/Chelmsford Road intersection is a problematic intersection according to the  Transportation Advisory Committee (TAC).  In a letter to the Selectmen, TAC Chair Bob Dorer recommended an independent intersection consultant be engaged to recommend possible design or operational treatments to improve safety.

Dorer wrote that “this intersection has been the scene of several accidents and many other close calls….Sight distances are difficult and the angle of the intersection leaves much to be desired.  And, in addition, the “thru” traffic on Rt. 4 at times travels well in excess of the posted speed limit.”

While attempts have been made in the past to address some of the issues with this intersection, there has never been a formal design developed.  Based on the recommendation of the Department of Public Works, Town Manager Rick Reed recommended to the Selectmen that a conceptual design be developed utilizing consultant services.  Once the conceptual design is developed using available DPW operating budget or Chapter 90 funds, the plan will be reviewed by the Selectmen prior to the development of a project design.

Hasn’t this intersection been “fixed” a few times in the last decade?
