Analysing the Impact of Bedford’s 2012 Refuse Contract

By Joan Bowen

At their meeting on January 27, the Selectmen reviewed a report on changes in volume and costs as a result of the 2012 refuse contract based on the automated, one-barrel-per-household program.  The objective of the contract was  to reduce costs of the service.

Based on numbers for fiscal years 2012 and 2013, the two year savings is $150,892.  This includes a reduction in the cost of the contract, unspent refuse disposal processing fees plus the revenue from the sale of bags and containers.

Information on the tonnage of refuse and recycling was included in the report.  Refuse disposal has decreased approximately 19.5% in the two years of the program; during this same period, recycling has increased by 25.5%.
