Willson Appointed to Represent Conservation Commission on HATS Committee

February 13, 2013

By Kim Siebert MacPhail

At Monday night’s Selectmen’s meeting, Conservation Commission member John Willson was appointed as one of Bedford’s liaisons to Hanscom Area Towns (HATS).  HATS—or HATS II as it is now known officially—is a group composed of representatives of towns that abut Hanscom Air Force Base: Bedford, Concord, Lexington and Lincoln. The intent of HATS II is to discuss matters of mutual concern, including—but not limited to—“issues arising out of the operation of Hanscom Airfield and the Hanscom Air Force Base.”

The membership composition of HATS II is, according to the official website, a selectman, a Planning Board member and up to two members-at-large who are, preferably, Conservation Commission or Hanscom Field Advisory members from each town. “The Committee may also invite attendance by other persons or organizations concerned with traffic, growth, or environmental issues,” the website says.

The  purpose of HATS II includes: “facilitating cooperation between the towns and all entities in the Hanscom Field area; handling funding for ground transportation management projects; reviewing and recommending on development and roadway projects; negotiating agreements on future activities in the Hanscom Field area (subject to ratification by each town’s Board of Selectmen); and reporting to towns’ committees.”

HATS II meetings are held monthly.
