Selectmen Moonan, Cordes Urge Action on Take-Home Vehicle Question

By Kim Siebert MacPhail

Concerned about the level of citizen dissatisfaction surrounding the unresolved Town take-home vehicle question, Selectman Bill Moonan asked that the Selectmen move forward with some form of action before Town Meeting. Selectman Cathy Cordes concurred that the matter would “unfortunately become an issue on Town Meeting floor” unless addressed beforehand.

“I hear increasing chatter in the world about doing something about [take home vehicles], Moonan said. “I hear that people out there are suggesting all sorts of things as radical as painting cars orange so they are highly visible to putting GPS in vehicles so you know where they are to taking vehicles away, anyway. I don’t want this thing to get further and further out of proportion…. I think the solutions that are in the memo that we all got are a good place to start.”

The memo Moonan spoke of was the result of research done by a study group formed to look more deeply into the use of town vehicles, both here and in other towns. That group consisted of Selectmen Moonan and Mike Rosenberg and Finance Committee members Steven Steele and Rich Bowen. Town Manager Reed is now making revisions to the memo; Reed stated that the matter would again come before the Selectmen this month.
