The press box at Sabourin Field

Selectman Mike Rosenberg reported at the Selectmen’s meeting on September 4th that the press box atop the home-side bleachers at the High School’s Sabourin football stadium has been declared unsafe for use.

“I don’t know how this slipped through—and I suspect it’s really not our issue [to address], but the press box at the football field has been condemned. It’s no longer safe,” said Rosenberg. “I don’t remember ever seeing a proposal in the capital budget to repair it or replace it but the building inspector has shut it down. It can’t be used for anything.”

Selectman Cathy Cordes said she remembered discussion at a Selectmen’s meeting a couple of years ago about the press box and its condition. “I know we talked about it….but I don’t remember whether it was POMS (Patrons of Music Students) or the BAA (Bedford Athletic Association) that had some kind of plan to rebuild it.”

In an email, Code Enforcement Officer Chris Laskey said that he and Facilities Director Richard Jones inspected the structure recently but that they did not officially condemn it.  They did agree, however, that “the press box could not be safely used until repairs were made to the structure and stairs.” He is unsure what direction the Schools are taking with regard to the matter.
